Thanks and apologies

Thank you、Yes please、No thank you、Not at all、Sorry、I'm afraid、Excuse me……

  • ↘do:声音从这个音节开始往下降(如 How d'you ↘do)
08

Go back to part of the conversation at the beginning of the unit.

Miss Roke
Here's the letter from Mr ↘Harris, Mr Wat↗kins.
Mr Watkins

In these next few exercises we give you a situation, and give you time for your answer. Then we give the correct answer, and finally you have time to repeat it.

三段小对话,每段都有人说 Sorry,回答却各不相同:Not at all(根本没事)、That's all right(是有点事,但我不介意)、I should think so too(你本来就该道歉,生气了)。

Now listen to these three short dialogues. In each one, someone says Sorry; and in each one the answer is different.

Alan
Hello, ↗Sarah. ↘Sorry to keep you ↗waiting.
Sarah
Not at ↘all.
Harriet
Hello, Da↗vid. ↘Sorry to keep you ↗waiting.
David
That's all ↘↗right.
David
↘Sorry to keep you waiting, A↗lan.
Alan
I should think so ↘too.

Alan 多半没迟到,就算晚了一点也无所谓,所以 Sarah 说 Not at all。

Sarah
Not at ↘all.
跟读
David
That's all ↘↗right.
跟读
Alan
I should think so ↘too.
跟读

so 和 too 都要拖长。

David
Hello, ↗Jo. It's ↘David ↗here. ↘Sorry to ring so ↗late.
Not at ↘all.
15

I'm afraid 说得又轻又快,降调落在后面的 don't / can't / haven't 上,而且要连在一起说。

There is another way of saying sorry, using I'm afraid …

David
D'you know Sarah's ↘address, Har↗riet?
Harriet?
Harriet
I'm afraid I ↘don't, David.
Harriet
I'm afraid I ↘don't, David.

I'm afraid I ↘can't.
Mr Watkins
And do you know the capital city of Ug↗distan?

I'm sorry?I'm afraid 用来引出对方不知道的新信息(我们帮不了您);I'm sorry 用在信息已经说过之后,重点是「抱歉」本身。

Now why do we sometimes say I'm afraid … and sometimes I'm sorry …? Listen to this conversation in a shop.

Customer
D'you sell garden ↘tools, ↗please?
Shopkeeper
I'm afraid we can't ↘help you, sir.
Customer
Any idea where I should ↘↗try?
Shopkeeper
What about ↘Cook's in the ↘Market Place?
Customer
↘That's an i↗dea. I'll go down there ↘now. Many ↗thanks.
Shopkeeper
Well, I'm ↘sorry we can't help ↗you.
Customer
That's ↘quite all right. Cheer↗io.

David
Come in, Har↗riet. I'm afraid it's rather ↘cold in here to↗day.
Harriet
It ↘is, ↘isn't it? Are you having trouble with the ↘↗heating?
David
↘Mmm. These things always happen in Janu↗ary, ↘don't they?
Harriet
Oh, ↘↗well! That's ↘life. I'll keep my coat ↘on, I ↗think.
David
Good i↘dea. ↘Sorry it's so ↗cold. ↘Anyway, they're coming to re↘pair it tomor↗row.

Shopkeeper
I'm afraid we can't ↘help you, sir.
跟读
Shopkeeper
Well, I'm ↘sorry we can't help ↗you.
跟读
David
Come in, Har↗riet. I'm afraid it's rather ↘cold in here to↗day.
跟读
David
Good i↘dea. ↘Sorry it's so ↗cold.
跟读

Remember that Excuse me is not the same as Sorry. Listen to this dialogue.

Sarah
Where ↘is the station? Can you find it on your ↘↗map, Alan?
Alan?

Man
I'm ↘sor↗ry! I'm a stranger here my↘self.
Alan
↘Oh. Thanks very much all the ↗same.
Sarah
↘Hey! That girl running in front of ↗us: she's just ↘dropped something. Ex↘cuse me!!!
Alan
↗No. She didn't ↘hear … ↘Hey! It's a ↘railway ticket. I'll put it in my ↘pocket.

As you heard, we use Excuse me to get someone's attention. We use it in restaurants when we want the waiter, for example. We never snap our fingers or clap our hands. Listen to David and Harriet in the White Horse Cafe.

David
Ex↘cuse ↗me.
Waiter

Notice that we use Excuse me only to get the other person's attention. Do not use it if the other person already knows that you want to speak. Between friends use Hey!

Sarah
↘Hey! That girl running in front of ↗us: she's just ↘dropped something.
Alan
↗No. She didn't ↘hear … ↘Hey! It's a ↘railway ticket. I'll put it in my ↘pocket.

Hey!:

Sarah
↘Hey! S'↘cuse me! You've dropped ↘this!
