交通是雅思口语的老话题：你怎么去上学上班？你的城市堵不堵？写作也常考私家车、公共交通和城市拥堵。光会说 traffic jam 和 crowded 不够，这一课挑 5 个英国人聊路况时的说法：「车挨着车」「一点点往前挪」「挤得满满的」「特别费油的车」和「平安到达」。

inch along
一点一点地往前挪书中例句
The traffic was stalled and we inched along across the bridge.
路上的车几乎停住了，我们是一点点蹭着开过那座桥的。
inch 是英寸，作动词就是「一寸一寸地移动」。除了车，人在人群里慢慢挤也能用：We inched our way through the crowd. 口语讲一次堵车经历，这个词马上让画面活起来。
雅思里这样用
On the day of my exam, the bus inched along for nearly an hour, and I almost arrived late.
考试那天，公交车慢吞吞地挪了将近一个小时，我差点迟到。

bumper-to-bumper
车挨着车，堵得严严实实书中例句
A new study shows that the daily struggle of bumper-to-bumper traffic is getting worse.
一项新研究显示，每天在车流里一点点熬的日子越来越难过了。
bumper 是汽车前后的保险杠，前车的后杠贴着后车的前杠，画面感很强。常说 bumper-to-bumper traffic，也可以说 The cars were bumper to bumper。描述家乡交通时，比 there are many cars 生动得多。

During rush hour, the main road near my home is bumper-to-bumper, so I usually take the underground instead.
高峰期我家附近的主路堵得水泄不通，所以我一般改坐地铁。

be jam-packed
挤得满满的书中例句
The bus terminal was jam-packed with commuters.
公交总站里全是赶着上下班的人。
be jam-packed with … 就是「被……塞满」，比 crowded 更有「塞到爆」的感觉。commuter 指每天通勤的人，英式英语谈交通几乎必用；动词是 commute。
雅思里这样用
Trains in big cities are jam-packed with commuters every morning, which is why some companies now offer flexible hours.
大城市的火车每天早上都挤满了通勤族，所以现在有些公司开始实行弹性上班时间。

a gas guzzler
特别耗油的车书中例句
Big cars tend to be gas guzzlers. Small cars are more fuel-efficient.
大车通常很费油，小车就省油多了。
guzzle 是「大口猛喝」，一辆车「狂喝油」就成了 gas guzzler。gas 本是美式说法（英国人加油说 petrol），但这个词英国人也照样用。后半句的 fuel-efficient（省油的）写作谈环保交通时很好用。

Governments could raise taxes on gas guzzlers to encourage people to buy smaller, cleaner cars.
政府可以对耗油大的车加税，鼓励大家买更小、更环保的车。

平平安安地到达书中例句
It was a difficult drive but we arrived home safe and sound.
这一路开得很不容易，好在我们平安到家了。
safe and sound 是固定说法，两个词都以 s 开头，读起来顺口，意思是「毫发无损、平安无事」。生活里报平安也常用：Text me when you get home safe and sound.
雅思里这样用
The roads were icy that night, but thanks to my father's careful driving, we got home safe and sound.
那天晚上路面结冰，幸亏爸爸开得小心，我们平平安安到了家。
